I have used Start Menu X Pro before. It is basically a Windows 7 style Start Menu, with a few extra features. It can be used on any version of Windows from XP though to Windows 10. However, it will be most useful for users of Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, as they both lack a Start Menu. With Start Menu X installed, your computer will boot to the Windows desktop, instead of the Start Screen with tiles, and you will have a Start Menu again, just like in previous versions of Windows.
In Windows 10, Microsoft included a Start Menu again. However, they have redesigned it. If you prefer the older Windows 7 style Start Menu, then you can use today's giveaway to replace the standard Windows 10 Start Menu. Personally, I really like the new Start Menu in Windows 10, but some will prefer a more traditional Start Menu. Also, some Windows 10 user have issues with the Start Menu not working as it should, and Start Menu X will be invaluable to them, as they will have a working Start Menu again.
For users of other versions of Windows, if you go the developer's website (startmenux.com), they have a video of Start Menu X in use, so you can have a look at it and see how it works, to help you decide if you want to install it.
If you miss today's giveaway, I recommend Classic Shell. It's a very popular Start Menu replacement, and it is free.
I bought this a while back after trying it out as a GOTD offer, and it has been improved on a regular basis.
I use it in conjunction with the standard start menu, (just hold shift down when you click on the start menu to bring up the standard one), which is handy when you first start using Start Menu until you get used to it.
It does configure itself when installed, but once you get used to it, it is well worth customizing to make it even easier to find what you are looking for.
I have been a staunch supporter of Start Menu X since its original freeware beginnings, and I use it on all my computers (5 to date). My two main reasons:
1) I can view every program, application, and Control Panel applet from a single screen.
2) I can access (start) any app with a single click.
These may not seem like a big deal, but for every program or applet that I need to use, I can see and access it from the main program screen. With over a hundred-fifty programs and applets, cutting my launch function from 3 clicks to one, saves a lot of mouse clicking.
As for seeing everything on a single screen, its simply how I work, especially if I'm not sure of which program I want to use. For example, I have 9 different photo editing programs, and having them grouped together makes selecting the right program very easy to do.
While its true that I could use desktop icons to launch a program with a single click, I have 92 photos that make for a visually appealing desktop slide show, and I'm unwilling to clutter-up my desktop workspace with icons blocking my photographs.
As to which version of the Start Menu program to use, its a matter of taste. While all my computers run Windows 10, I prefer the uncluttered, single screen version of the program, and thus I use Start Menu X. For those who prefer the OS divisions, Start Menu 10 may be the better of the 2 programs to use.
Whenever I setup a new computer for someone, Start Menu X is the second program I install, right after I load my alternate file manager, xplorer2. At a minimum, folks should give Start Menu X a decent try.
I've been using Start Menu X now for some few years - on a Win 8.1 then on a Win 10 .. and it's a super little program well worth anyone at least giving a try .. especially as you can get this full Pro version to do so. It' a huge improvement on that dratted earlier Windows which even did away with the START button but in any case it is vastly better in appearance and easier to see at a quick glance just what program you have on and available and it can even be changed in appearance if you so wish. As a free program it's got to be an excellent one to try out
Sadly, as I use Classic Shell, therefore I won't be giving this one a try, again. I did on the last giveaway and didn't like it very much, especially the interface and outdated XP-like power options icons.
Classic Shell is free, open source and extremely customizable, and when combined with Classic Explorer and QTTabBar it gives me a whole new Windows experience :)
I'm sure many people will find this Start Menu X useful, however if you don't like it for any reason, feel free to give Classic Shell a try, it's extremely customizable - http://classicshell.net/
